ALEX FERGUSON admits he wishes Mark Hughes was playing for QPR when they take on Manchester City next weekend.
Despite a 2-0 win over Swansea, United need Rangers to do them a favour at the Etihad to prevent City winning the Premier League.
United take on Sunderland on the final day of the season, but all eyes will be on the result on the blue side of Manchester.
Ferguson, however, has not given up hope of a shock result for the struggling Londoners — even if their manager is long retired.
He said: "We have to go to Sunderland with the right spirit to win the match. You never know.
“Our responsibility is to win the game.
“QPR need a point — you never know. I just wish Sparky was playing."
Speaking about today’s win, he added: “We did what we had to do. We won the match.
“We had a lot of chances. I thought we played very, very well.
“I was pleased to win the match.”
United midfielder Michael Carrick said his side had not given up hope of snatching the title but admitted they had been deflated after watching City’s win before kick-off.
He said: "We were watching the game at Newcastle and hoping for something. It didn’t quite happen for us.
“We had to be professional and to take it on to next week.
“It was about winning the game. Credit to the boys after watching the game before. It can be difficult. We can only hope for next week.”
Asked if they had any hope, after first-half goals from Paul Scholes and Ashley Young today, he added: “Who knows? Football is a funny game. Stranger things have happened in the past.
“We have to concentrate on ourselves. Sunderland will be a tough game.
“We still have a chance of winning the league.”
