Almost exactly 46 years ago to the day, on 29 May 1966, the Aztec Stadium in Mexico
City was officially opened. It remains one of the largest arenas in the
world today. Only Korea DPR's Rungrado May Day stadium in Pyongyang
(150,000 capacity) and the Salt Lake stadium in Calcutta, India (120,000
capacity) are able to house more than the 105,000 fans that can fit
into Mexico City's showpiece arena.
Yet
the Aztec Stadium, situated in the metropolis' southern suburb of
Coyoacan, is not only famous for the sheer numbers of spectators it can
hold. It also has the honour of being the only ground in the world to
have hosted two FIFA World Cup Finals™.
Both the 1970 and 1986 editions of the tournament took place in Mexico.
Both Finals, respectively between Brazil and Italy (4-1) and Argentina
and West Germany (3-2), were contested in the Aztec Stadium.
Furthermore, the Finals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup Mexico 1983 and the FIFA U-17 World Cup Mexico 2011 were played there.
Take a journey back in time with FIFA.com and relive the highlights of the Aztec Stadium.
