PAPISS CISSE’S two wonder goals helped Newcastle stun Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
The Senegal star hit a sublime volley in the first half to give Toon the lead.
Alan Pardew’s men then had to withstand 10 minutes of injury time after Magpies midfielder Cheick Tiote was taken off on a stretcher following a challenge from John Obi Mikel.
But their task was made considerably easier when Cisse fired in remarkable strike from distance with the outside of his boot to settle the match.
The result sees Newcastle move four points clear of Chelsea but stay in fifth due to Tottenham’s thrashing of Bolton.
Newcastle threatened after 15 minutes when Mike Williamson headed down a long free-kick into the chest of Demba Ba, who controlled well but could not get a shot away with his back to goal.
Having largely been second-best for the opening exchanges, the visitors took the lead through Cisse on 19 minutes.
Left-back David Santon carved out the opening, surging forward and playing the ball into the feet of the Senegal striker.
The Blues struggled to mount a response to going behind and when Ramires tamely dragged a shot wide from 25 yards on the half-hour, it summed up how far the hosts’ performance had tailed off.
Slowly, though, Chelsea came back into the match, and when they next threatened on 36 minutes inevitably it was Torres at the heart of the move, the striker drifting out to the right wing and beating his man for pace before sending over a wicked cross that Malouda headed just wide.
Two minutes later Di Matteo’s charges went close again, this time Ivanovic heading over from Meireles’ corner.
Hatem Ben Arfa’s low cross from the set-piece eluded Yohan Cabaye but the ball ran through to Ba, who struck a first-time effort that rattled the crossbar.
Di Matteo reacted to Newcastle’s dominance by bringing on Mata for the ineffective Daniel Sturridge for the start of the second half.
And Chelsea looked more positive in the early exchanges, with both Torres and Ramires sending in teasing crosses that Newcastle’s defence cleared.
Just before the hour Tiote needed lengthy treatment after an aerial challenge with Mikel.
The uncompromising Magpies midfielder appeared to take a blow in the face and landed hard on the base of his back.
The 25-year-old Ivorian was treated by medical staff from both teams and paramedics for nearly 10 minutes before being carefully removed from the pitch on a stretcher to generous applause from the stands.
Ba reacted angrily to a foul by Ivanovic on 73 minutes later, but the striker was given chance to cool off by Magpies boss Alan Pardew as he made way for Shola Ameobi.
On 78 minutes Lampard was brought into the action for Meireles and within seconds Drogba tested Krul in the tricky wet conditions with a fierce free-kick that the Dutchman clutched gratefully to his chest.
Drogba went down in the area under the challenge of Fabricio Coloccini on 80 minutes but referee Mark Halsey rejected the home side’s claims for a penalty.
Tiote’s injury allied to the raft of substitutions meant 10 minutes of stoppage time was added when 90 minutes were up, yet just when it looked as though the hosts would lay siege to the visitors’ goal, Cisse popped up with a wondrous strike to settle the match.
A long throw down the line was knocked down by Ameobi, and from the left side of the field, around 30 yards from goal, Cisse unleashed a stunning swerving effort with the outside of his right boot that completely deceived Cech as it dipped just under the crossbar.
