VICTOR MOSES led Wigan's romp to the brink of Premier League survival - by rocking Newcastle's top-four hopes.
The winger struck an early double before Shaun Maloney's fine finish and Franco di Santo's 30-yard curler completed the Latics' unstoppable first-half.
Outplayed Toon had no answer to Wigan's best 45 minutes of the season.
And, despite Papiss Cisse hitting the bar, Newcastle were little better after the break as the Latics moved four points clear of the bottom four with their fifth win in six games.
Moses flick-headed the opener on 13 minutes - the first goal the Magpies have let in for four matches.
Then he punished Fabio Coloccini's poor clearance two minutes later by curving home a left-wing cross from Emmerson Boyce.
Di Santo slipped in Maloney to drill a clinical third goal low into the corner in the 36th minute.
And - after Demba Ba blazed Newcastle's best chance wide - Latics' playmaker Di Santo lifted a stunning fourth over Tim Krul just before the break.
Only Coloccini's superb interception denied Moses a decent opportunity to complete his hat-trick as Wigan kept pressing early in the second period.
Then the Latics' livewire scorched a rising shot just off-target before Krul thwarted him once again.
Newcastle finally roused beyond the hour-mark, Ali Al Habsi somehow defying Papiss Cisse's 10-yarder.
Then Cisse cracked an angled drive off the bar and Hatem Ben Arfa rifled wide.
But Wigan again pushed for goals near the end as they maintained their incredible transformation.
