Basel today finally celebrated victory in the Swiss Super League title race after a 3-1 victory over Lausanne Sports.
Basel's 15th league title, and third in a row, was effectively sealed last weekend when they beat Sion 3-0, but the club had yet to recognise the achievement since second-placed Lucerne are still awaiting the outcome of an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport that could earn them two further points.
Lucerne drew 2-2 against Grasshoppers yesterday to end their hopes, but Basel also had one eye on FC Sion's appeal against the 36-point deduction they were handed in December for fielding ineligible players. Were Sion to succeed in getting their points back, they theoretically still pose a threat to Basel.
However, any uncertainty was ended today as Basel eased to victory thanks to goals fromMarco Streller (9), Alexander Frei (64), and Jacques Zoua (90). Lausanne replied through Figueiredo Gleidionor after 20 minutes.
In the day's other game, Sion, who sit bottom of the table on 14 points after their point deduction by the Swiss FA, were held to a 1-1 draw at Thun. Sion went ahead through Cristian Florin Ianu after 30 minutes, while a Back Aislan own goal after 69 minutes ensured it ended all square.
