My part in our downfall England fan's penalty shootout flash (THE SUN)

A DESPERATE Three Lions fan tried to nobble the star who scored Italy’s winning penalty against England — by flashing his willy.

The mystery supporter, standing behind Joe Hart’s goal, dropped his pants as Alessandro Diamanti stepped up to take the final shoot-out spot kick.
But the unruffled Diamanti calmly stroked the ball past Hart to send England out of Euro 2012.
Sharp-eyed TV viewers spotted the bit of last gasp gamesmanship by the unidentified fan, who was wearing an England goalie’s top and a red and white wig. And yesterday photos of the climatic kick clearly show him with shorts and pants down round his knees.
A pal beside him looks on the verge of doing the same — but has obviously made his move too late.
The disappointed England players flew home yesterday — with coach Roy Hodgson promising to now build a brilliant squad by following Germany’s blueprint.
Hodgson said Germany had transformed a lacklustre team into world-beaters in six years.

He added: “We saw with Germany in 2006 that they went into the World Cup finals highly unfancied, with a number of young players and some older players who had failed, and we have seen how they have kicked on.
“We have to take heart from that. I would like to think that there’s good reason for optimism for England because there’s good young players coming through.
“There is no doubt those younger players will figure in future.”

Our shoot-out defeat by Italy after a 0-0 draw was our sixth defeat in seven penalty deciders.
And Hodgson warned our penalty paranoia will be even worse next time. He said: “Every failure that we have exacerbates the situation for the future.
“We got to the penalty shoot-out but it’s so difficult because our record is such a poor one. There is nothing you can do to prepare for that moment.
“We have to get better over 90 minutes and we have to try and get better at penalty shoot-outs.”

Dejected England skipper Steven Gerrard said the players had given their all for the fans.
He added: “I feel both pride and pain and I am sure the supporters will agree we have played for the shirt. We gave it all we had and played with a lot of pride.
“But that feeling will be mixed because we have gone out at the quarter final again and in a penalty shoot-out again.”

Ashley Cole, who missed England’s final penalty, managed to find a smile as the team boarded their plane home in Krakow. He and Joe Hart shared a joke as they walked up the steps.
An onlooker said: “They were cracking up laughing over something as they boarded the plane.
“They obviously think there’s no point dwelling on what happened in the shoot-out.”

England’s 23-man squad has been praised for its battling performances at Euro 2012 — especially as Hodgson took charge less than six weeks before it kicked off.
But there was no warm welcome home for the players yesterday.

Not a single England fan turned up to cheer the team as it landed at Luton Airport at around 4.30pm.
Six policemen who had been drafted in to deal with crowds simply stood around watching.

Audience is biggest in 8 years

The TV Lions
THE Three Lions’ loss to Italy drew the highest peak TV audience in eight years — with 23.3 million glued to the penalty shoot-out.
It also netted the third highest viewing figure ever recorded for an England game, figures revealed.
Seventy-seven per cent of all TV viewers saw BBC1’s spot-kicks coverage at 10.20pm on Sunday — beating the previous peak record in Euro 2004’s clash with Portugal.
With an average of 17.4 million fans watching, it was also the highest audience of the tournament so far.
The 1966 World Cup final win over West Germany (BBC1, 32.3 million) is the most-viewed game of all time, followed by 1998’s World Cup clash with Argentina (ITV1, 23.8 million).

GUESS that’s what you call a penalty quick...
Roy Hodgson’s nails had been gnawed almost to nothing yesterday when he attended a press conference.
The England coach, 64, had been snapped anxiously chewing his fingers during the match. So it’s no wonder his hands looked a bite worse for wear.
