HOUSTON -- The Houston Texans have agreed to contract extensions for both general manager Rick Smith and coach Gary Kubiak, the team announced Thursday.
Kuharsky: One Man to Thank
It's not a stretch to say Gary Kubiak and Rick Smith have one man to thank for their contract extensions -- Wade Phillips, ESPN.com's Paul Kuharsky writes. Blog
Smith and Kubiak are in the final years of their current contract. Smith's extension is for four years, which will keep him with the team through 2016.
Kubiak's is a three-year agreement which re-does the last year of his current deal and keeps him under contract through 2014. Team owner Bob McNair says he offered Kubiak a four-year deal, but he preferred to make it for three.
McNair said last month that he wanted to extend the contracts of the pair after the team finished 10-6 to win its first AFC South title and make the playoffs for the first time.
"I believe it is very important to have stability within an organization, and it starts with leadership," McNair said in a statement. "We now have all of our key executives and coaches under long-term contracts. This includes (president) Jamey Rootes, (vice chairman/COO) Cal (McNair) and now (executive vice president/GM) Rick Smith and (head coach) Gary Kubiak. All four of these men are key components of our organization and I am pleased they will serve in leadership roles going forward.
"I feel this action gives us stability going forward and positions us to have many successful seasons for the Houston Texans."
