WRECKER-IN-CHIEF: Vinay Kumar, who picked up eight wickets, celebrates after dismissing Delhi’s Yogesh Nagar.
NEW DELHI: R. Vinay Kumar bowled the spell of his life to wreck Delhi on a helpful surface at the Roshanara Club ground here on Tuesday. Vinay claimed eight wickets as Delhi was bowled out for 154 and Karnataka finished the opening day at 91 for two in the Ranji Trophy Super League match.
Rahul Dravid won a good toss and Vinay did the rest. It was an eventful morning as Aakash Chopra took a brave decision to play with a troubled knee but was out cheaply.
The trend was set by Chopra’s dismissal to a delivery that swung late and Delhi continued to slide.
Saving grace
It could have been more embarrassing but for some sensible show by Puneet Bisht at No. 8. His unbeaten 31 was the saving grace for the home team against an exhibition of controlled swing bowling.
The day was all about Vinay’s swing bowling. Resisting the temptation to over-stretch in amiable conditions, Vinay showed remarkable restraint to bowl a nagging line and length that left Delhi in a shambles.
With support from the other end through Abhimanyu Mithun, the Karnataka seamers cast a stifling net with their clever stuff and Delhi failed to cope up to the challenge.
After an incisive spell of 10-6-10-3, Vinay returned to polish off the Delhi innings with a wonderful show of 11.4-5-22-5. Playing and missing was the order of the day as Vinay created havoc in the middle.
His accuracy fetched him eight wickets on a day when batting was not as hazardous as Delhi made it out to be. The point was driven home by K.B. Pawan and Rahul Dravid later as they batted flawlessly to add 71 quality runs after two early dents.
