GERMANY booted Greece out of Europe last night — and for once there wasn’t a financial crisis in sight.
Jubilant Chancellor Angela Merkel saw her country’s footballers thrash their Euro 2012 quarter-final opponents in Poland.
Their 4-2 romp, which set up a possible semi-final clash with England, sent Greece packing from the tournament — as Europe’s politicians battled to keep the broke nation in the single currency after months of turmoil.
It looked hopeful for Greece when they grabbed a surprise equaliser after Germany led at half-time.
But the Germans soon struck back with three goals before Greece managed a late consolation strike.
German fans rubbed it in by chanting: “We paid for your tickets.”
England will face Germany if they beat classy Italy tomorrow.
Ear we go! Roo tunes a turn-off
ENGLAND stars chilled out after training in Krakow yesterday — and told of a prank played on Wayne Rooney.
Goalie Joe Hart revealed that Roo put his playlist of guitar bands on the changing room’s iPod deck before the game against Ukraine.
But team-mates, who include Ashley Young, took the mick out of his taste by donning headphones when he turned his back for a second.
Team go nuts for 5 daily eats
ENGLAND’S players are being fuelled for tomorrow’s game by eating FIVE meals a day.
They are scoffing goodies including porridge, fruit, pasta, fish, chicken and steak to build up energy.
And between meals they constantly snack on Bounce balls, a chewy high-energy peanut treat. The squad are training so hard they are burning 4,000 calories a day, twice the number a man usually needs.
Before the Italy kick-off they will tuck into spag bol, salad, chicken and rice pudding with jam.
Team chef Tim De’Ath said: “It is important to keep meals interesting so they don’t get bored.”
Tim — nicknamed Dr Death by the players — cooked for stars including Leonardo DiCaprio and Sigourney Weaver before joining England.
Armchair fan dies of exhaustion
A CHINESE football fan died after going 11 nights without sleep — to view every second of Euro 2012 on TV.
The time difference meant Jiang Xiaoshan, who supported England, stayed up all night then went to work.
But after watching Ireland lose 2-0 to Italy this week Jiang, 26, died of exhaustion. Doctors in Changhsa said lack of sleep weakened his immune system.
- SALES of sexy lingerie have soared by 38 per cent since Euro 2012 started as women try to get their footie-mad partners’ attention, Littlewoods revealed.
- FAN Andrew Jenkinson, 62, is refusing to remove England flags from his cab despite Scarborough chiefs banning them for being “unsafe” and potentially “offensive”.
