JAV SOME OF THAT ... Javier Hernandez celebrates after scoring his second
Published: 2 hrs ago
JAVIER HERNANDEZ and Robin van Persie were at the double as Manchester United continued their march towards the Premier League title.
The Mexican broke the deadlock in the first half before strike partner Robin van Persie doubled the advantage.
Wigan looked for a way back into the game after the break but any hope of a comeback slipped away when Hernandez slotted his second.
And Van Persie added a final touch of gloss before full-time to preserve United's seven-point lead at the top of the table.
The first chance of the game fell to Hernandez, who fired straight at Latics keeper Ali Al Habsi.
Wigan refused to sit deep against the Premier League leaders but Ivan Ramis and Gary Caldwell needed to be alert to keep Hernandez and Van Persie quiet.
Arouna Kone was giving Jonny Evans cause for concern in the United defence, although it was Hernandez who was left frustrated when his 11th-minute effort was ruled out for offside.
Roberto Martinez’s men gradually grew in confidence and Jean Beausejour blazed over before wasting a good chance after a clipped ball from Franco Di Santo caught out Rio Ferdinand.
United came back into the game with Ryan Giggs whipping a dangerous ball towards Hernandez, but Maynor Figueroa was on hand to clear for a corner.
The visitors continued to press and Al Habsi spilled a Van Persie free-kick before managing to scramble the ball away as Tom Cleverley and Hernandez closed in.
But Wigan’s resistance was broken in the 35th minute when Hernandez pounced after Al Habsi pushed Patrice Evra’s effort into his path.
The goal shook Wigan and they were two down a couple of minutes before the break.
A ball from Hernandez found his strike partner and Van Persie made the most of a slip from Ramis before curling an effort beyond Al Habsi.
Wigan, who found themselves pinned back early in the second half, thought they had equalised with 59 minutes on the clock.
Di Santo slid the ball across goal for Kone to finish at the back post but he was just was the wrong side of Ferdinand and the goal was ruled out for offside.
United wrapped up the points in the 63rd minute when Hernandez slammed home his second of the afternoon.
Van Persie smashed a free-kick into the wall but his fellow striker reacted quickest to pick up the loose ball and slip it under Al Habsi.
With the game in the bag, United boss Alex Ferguson threw on Shinji Kagawa and Chris Smalling in place of Michael Carrick and Chris Smalling.
Martinez also responded with a double substitution, sending on Ronnie Stam for Gary Caldwell and Jordi Gomez in place of Di Santo.
But Van Persie rubbed salt into the wounds by notching his second two minutes from time.
Wigan failed to cut out Danny Welbeck's ball and RVP made no mistake after being teed up by Hernandez.
