DZEK MATE ... Edin Dzeko shows off a message on his T-shirt as he celebrates scoring City's second
Published: 1 hr ago
EDIN DZEKO and James Milner were Manchester City’s stars as the champions saw off 10-man Arsenal at the Emirates.
Laurent Koscielny received his marching orders early on for bringing down Dzeko who then missed from the spot.
But a fine Milner strike and then a tap-in from the Bosnian gave City a first-half lead they never looked like giving up.
Roberto Mancini’s men also had a man sent off before the game was up — Vincent Kompany seeing red for a tackle on Jack Wilshere.
But that was the only blot on City’s copy book as they moved to within seven points of Premier League leaders Manchester United while Arsenal remain in sixth.
The Gunners had a nightmare start when Koscielny was sent off after just nine minutes.
Mike Dean’s decision caused bemusement but replays showed that the Frenchman had clearly wrestled Dzeko down to the floor inside the box.
The City striker dust himself down to take the spot kick. But Wojciech Szczesny saved it on to the post and then gobbled up the rebound just as it looked like it was about to clear the line.
It was a break for Arsenal but they could not hold out for long. The hosts were caught napping by a quick free-kick and Carlos Tevez found Milner who rifled his strike home from 12 yards.
Tevez had a shot of his own straight at Szczesny and Javi Garcia headed a corner wide as City continued to dominate.
And it was no surprise when a second came their way as Milner’s cross found Tevez whose effort was saved Szczesny but tapped in by Dzeko.
City threatened to run riot and Jack Wilshere had to clear Garcia’s goalbound header off the line.
It went the same way after the break with Dzeko heading Milner’s cross over the bar.
Tevez had a golden chance to make it three when he was played clean through on goal by his strike partner. But he took an age to round Szczesny and the Polish stopper nipped the ball off his feet.
Sub Olivier Giroud then headed Santi Cazorla’s free-kick over Joe Hart’s bar as Arsenal tried to salvage a lost cause.
Their task was helped as City captain Vincent Kompany was handed a straight red for an alleged two-footed tackle on Wilshere.
But despite Theo Walcott having an effort cleared off the line by Joleon Lescott, Arsene Wenger's men could not find a way back.
