Suarez was banned for eight games after being found guilty of racially abusing Evra, and a new row erupted when he refused to shake the Frenchman’s hand before the Old Trafford return in February.
Now the Uruguayan striker — currently preparing for the Olympics with his national side — has revealed on TV show TV show RR Gol in his homeland how the whole trial left him heartbroken.
Suarez insisted: “It was so hard what happened to me. I don’t show my emotions on the field but outside I do — and I cried a lot with all the Evra stuff.
“The trial week was so complicated and my wife and I cried a lot. That’s when I realised who were the people who really support me and who were the ones with me because of personal interest.”
The incident may have caused heartache for Suarez, but he pointedly did not issue an actual apology or admit any regret at his actions.
Instead he claimed their bitter rivals used it to try and get him sidelined.
He added: “People at the club are sure it was a way United used to put me out of the team and stop Liverpool.
“I had to go to Manchester in a taxi for the trial. I got up at seven in the morning and came home at nine at night. I was exhausted, so tired, and wanted to cry, and kick all the things around me.
“I came home and wanted to do all that, but couldn’t because my daughter was there. They were really complicated days, and then things became harder after the punishment.
“Before the match against United, I promised my wife, the manager and the directors I was going to shake my hand with Evra.
“I had been punished because of him, but had no problems with shaking hands, and I was not forced to greet him.
“But I thought ‘why not,’ if my punishment was over. I had no problems with Evra. It was only a handshake and I was okay with that.
“What happened between me and Evra at Old Trafford was a misunderstanding.
In fact, I think it was all arranged against me again, as had happened with the punishment.
“The media in England showed the moment I passed in front of him, but they didn’t see he had his hand low before. Only the media in Uruguay and Spain showed I wanted to shake his hand.
“But in England, United has this political power, and you have to respect that and shut your mouth.”
