OH BEBE ... Rio Ferdinand leads Man Utd salutes for last-minute scorer Bebe
Published: Today at 16:53
BEBE'S last-minute leveller completed 24 hours of twists and turns for Manchester United.
Boss Alex Ferguson last night revealed a shock bid for Arsenal striker Robin van Persie.
Then this morning England defender Chris Smalling was ruled out for another 10 weeks with a broken metatarsal.
And finally, forgotten winger Bebe pounced at the far post this afternoon — four minutes after Alcardo van Graan’s well-taken opener for the South African hosts.
Javier Hernandez — perhaps the hitman with most to lose should RVP arrive — had buzzed a bit livelier here against Cape Town today than he did in Wednesday's win in Durban.
And Shinji Kagawa looked stylish, if a little lightweight, in midfield.
But United failed to press Ajax back for any decent amount of time.
Nonetheless, ex-Liverpool keeper Sander Westerveld had to thwart Hernandez after the Mexican rose to meet Antonio Valencia's far-post cross.
And Hernandez just failed to reach a delicate Michael Carrick through-pass.
That, though, was virtually the total of United's threat in a first half that Kagawa eased himself through.
The same playmaker steered a free header wide on the hour when Hernandez teed him up with a glorious chance.
And fellow new boy Nick Powell was given 25 minutes to impress in central midfield.
But it was the introduction of record signing Dimitar Berbatov — who seems likely to move on — that really enlivened the 50,000 crowd, though Van Graan threatened to emerge the hero until Bebe grabbed a deserved equaliser.
