Great Britain's Corinna Lawrence set up a last-32 contest with European champion Simona Gherman in the women's epee with a win over Caterin Bravo Aranguiz.
Plymouth fencer Lawrence registered a 15-11 victory against Chilean Bravo Aranguiz.
She built on a 4-3 lead at the end of the first period to pick up a 9-5 advantage at the end of the second.
Lawrence retained that lead before sealing the win with a double.
She will now face a significant test against Romanian Gherman on Monday afternoon [13:20 BST].
Romania and China are expected to dominate the medals, with the two countries each contributing three fencers in the world's top eight.
