Up close and personal with Petra Kvitova (ROLAND GARROS)

Is your first match on the WTA circuit like a first kiss – you remember it all your life?
Not really, because I don’t remember much about my first match (laughs). When you’re living in the moment and in the middle of your career, it’s a bit difficult to take a step back and go through your memories. When I retire maybe. Today, my best memories are winning Wimbledon and the Fed Cup. 2011 was a pretty fantastic year.
Is it compulsory for Czech players to be Martina Navratilova fans?
Maybe (smiles). I don’t know what the other girls think, but I’ve always admired her game, her victories and her personality. She has a very intelligent approach to tennis. And she’s really nice.
Prostejov is the club where all the Czech champions train. What’s the club’s secret?
(She smiles). You get good massages, good sparring partners and the club owner is a great manager – he gets the best out of everyone. He’s lucky to have us – but we’re also lucky to have him.
With your height (1.83m) you could have played basketball or volleyball, your two favourite sports. Was choosing tennis a tough decision?
I waited until I was 10 before choosing tennis. Once I made my decision, I stopped everything else. I played basketball at high school, but not at club or competition level. Although, I did play volleyball at a more competitive level.
You seem cool and collected on court. When you win, how do you celebrate?
I don’t really go crazy, because I’m not much of a party animal. I don’t drink much, it’s not my thing. I prefer going out to dinner with my parents, my friends and my team, with long talks and good food.
Your father and brother are teachers, and your other brother is an engineer. Studying is important in your family. Are you the exception to the rule?
My dad insisted I finish high school and get my diploma. I was a good student, I’ve always thought it was important, but I couldn’t go to university while I was on the circuit. Will I go to university after I finish my tennis career? It’s early days to be asking that question.
Very few women have as strong a serve as you. Is it because you were surrounded by boys when you were a kid?
Not at all (smiles). It was mainly my height that helped. I have a pretty aggressive baseline game, so I like attacking and hitting the ball hard. Strength isn’t the most important thing for me – it’s placement and finding the angles.
Is being world no.4 good for picking up guys?
I have a boyfriend so I don’t really know. I met him before my 2011 season, and it’s much better like that (laughs)!
How have you managed getting rich so young?
I put my money in the bank, and I don’t spend much. I have all the money I need. So quite honestly, it’s not something I worry about or that I’ve had to manage. I don’t pay much attention to it.
Who would you spend a lot of money to go and see?
Pink, no question about it.
Can you sing us a Czech song?
I’m a big fan of Czech pop music, but I won’t sing – it’s better for you I don’t (laughs)!
