HISTORY-MAKING Olympian Oscar Pistorius has been charged with murder after reportedly shooting his girlfriend dead having mistakenly thought she was a burglar.

The 26-year-old South African — the first Paralympian to appear at the Olympics — is accused of shooting Reeva Steenkamp, 30, in the head, chest and arm at 4am (2am UK time) today.
There were suggestions that model Steenkamp was gunned down as she attempted to play a Valentine’s Day surprise on her athlete lover.
But police said there had been previous incidents at the address described as “allegations of a domestic nature”. Brigadier Denise Beukes said police were “very surprised” by the burglar suggestion.

Dressed in a grey hooded jacket, tracksuit trousers and trainers, Pistorius walked with head bowed from the Boschkop police station this morning, before he was taken to Pretoria’s Mamelodi Day Hospital in a police convoy.
He will not appear before a court today as originally expected and will remain in custody over night.
A police spokeswoman added that police will oppose bail "based on the evidence that is currently being gathered."
Pistorius is known as the Blade Runner because of the ground-breaking prosthetics he uses for racing.
He made history at London 2012 when he became the first amputee sprinter to compete in the Olympics, running in the 400m and 4x400m relay.
The Johannesburg-born athlete was born without fibulas in his legs and had the limbs amputated below the knee when he was 11 months old.
According to Talk Radio 702 host Kribani Pillay in Johannesburg, Pistorius told police that he thought the woman was an intruder.

A 9mm pistol was recovered. According to unconfirmed reports four shots were fired.
A police spokesperson described Pistorius as "traumatised after losing someone close to him".
Yesterday, Miss Steenkamp fatefully posted a tweet about Valentine's Day, writing: "What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow???"
The last tweet she posted on her Twitter account read "I'm there like a bear!!! Yayyyy!!!! X" after a friend invited her round for afternoon tea and cupcakes.

He said police were called following a shooting at a townhouse complex in the Silverlakes district, adding: "When police arrived they found the paramedics attending to the woman.
"The paramedics declared the woman dead on the scene and police proceeded with their investigation of the scene."
The woman’s body has reportedly been removed from the scene. Pistorius has since undergone blood, alcohol and forensic tests.

There, hospital staff took blood samples, tested under nails and looked for scratches and bruises, a police spokeswoman said.
Outside his home, Miss Steenkamp’s friend Mashadi Motsogi broke down in tears and revealed she only heard the tragic news via Twitter.
She said: “It was only on my way to campus when I saw journalists come in front of the estate, when I realised that it might be true, that she might be dead.

“Look, security here is safe. We moved to this area for security reasons. It does not make sense to me that my friend was shot, mistaken for an intruder.”
