OSCAR Pistorius sobbed to his best friend: “My baba, I’ve killed my baba — God take me away” moments after his girlfriend was shot, it emerged last night.
The panicking 26-year-old Blade Runner called pal Justin Divaris BEFORE alerting emergency services to the early hours shooting of model Reeva Steenkamp, it was claimed.
Justin told how he sped to Pistorius’s luxury home and said the star sobbed for an hour in his garage as cops sealed off the property.
It was revealed last night that Reeva, 29, was sitting on the TOILET when she was hit four times, in the arm, head, hip and finger by bullets fired through the bathroom door.
Pistorius carried her blood-soaked body to the front door and was trying to save her with the kiss of life when a security guard and neighbour arrived — alerted by the gunshots.
But horrified helpers told how they heard tragic Reeva draw her last breath as she died in his arms moments later at the house on the security-patrolled Silver Woods estate in Pretoria, South Africa.
Luxury car businessman Justin had introduced Reeva to Olympics star Pistorius, who famously runs using prosthetic blades after his legs were amputated as a child.
He said: “It’s all very sad. Oscar called me at 3.55am saying that Reeva had been shot. I said, ‘What are you talking about? I don’t understand’. He repeated himself, ‘There’s been a terrible accident, I shot Reeva’.
“Next thing his neighbour picked up the phone and told me it was true and told me to get to Oscar’s home.
“I was in total shock. I asked the neighbour, ‘Is she OK? Did the gun go off by accident’? She said, ‘No. She’s not OK. You need to get here’.”
Justin, 27, and his girlfriend Sam arrived at Pistorius’s home shortly after police in the early hours of Valentine’s Day.
He added: “It was very traumatic. It was already a crime scene and we were not allowed in the house.
“But we could see Reeva through the door lying covered in blankets and towels. Oscar was being detained in the garage but they let me speak to him.
“He was totally incoherent and just kept saying, ‘My baba, I’ve killed my baba. God take me away’. He must have been sobbing there for an hour.
“I was with him ten minutes and asked exactly what happened but he couldn’t answer and just kept repeating the same thing.” Forensic experts are convinced Reeva’s heart was still pumping as she was carried through the house because blood was splattered on the walls.
A source in South Africa said last night: “A neighbour and a security guy were the first to arrive at the scene and found a real house of horror.
“Pistorius was standing in the doorway with Reeva dying in his arms when they got there.
“There was a great deal of blood and they were convinced Reeva was still alive at that point when Pistorius was giving her the kiss of life. But she died soon after. The guys said they heard her death rattle when she drew her last breath.”
Pistorius wept uncontrollably in court on Friday as he was charged with Reeva’s murder and locked in a cell at Pretoria’s Brooklyn Police Station, where he was on suicide watch.
His agent said after the 40-minute hearing that Pistorius “disputed” the murder charge “in the strongest terms”. Reeva’s family were last night preparing for her funeral on Tuesday in her home city Port Elizabeth.
Doctors were treating her parents June and Barry for shock. Justin’s girlfriend Sam, who runs a catering firm with June, said: “They’ve taken it very badly.”
Barry admitted he and June “were at a complete loss” — but said he felt for Pistorius. He said: “He must be going through things we don’t know about.
“There is no hatred in our hearts. This is a very difficult time for us. We need to find answers. We ask the Lord every day to help us find a reason why this should happen to Reeva.
“She was the most beautiful, kind girl in the world.”
Meanwhile Pistorius’s family refuted claims of discord between him and Reeva, insisting they had been happy and “making plans” for a future together.
The athlete’s uncle Arnold Pistorius said in a statement: “We are in a state of total shock — firstly about the tragic death of Reeva who we had all got to know well and care for deeply. Oscar — as you can imagine — is also numb with shock as well as grief. We as a family are also battling to come to terms with him being charged with murder.
“After consulting with legal representatives we deeply regret the allegation of pre-meditated murder. We have no doubt there is no substance to the allegation and that the State’s own case, including its own forensic evidence, strongly refutes any possibility of a pre-meditated murder — or indeed any murder at all.”
Pistorius’s brother Carl tweeted: “Our hearts are broken too... we have lost a beautiful Lady. This tragedy has changed the landscape of our lives.”
Pistorius, whose hearing was adjourned until Tuesday, faces a fight to avoid a life term after it emerged his case will be prosecuted by court legend Gerrie Nel.
Tough-talking Nel’s reputation is such that he is known is South African courts as Mr Slam Dunk. Detective Mike Bolhuis said: “Once he gets hold of a case it’s all over. He never loses.”
Dad: It was all mistake
OSCAR Pistorius mistook Reeva for an intruder, his father claimed yesterday.
Henke Pistorius, 59, said he would do “whatever needs to be done” to clear his son’s name.
Asked if Oscar took Reeva for an intruder, he said: “I have zero doubt. It’s absurd to even suggest anything different.
“When you wake in the middle of the night — and crime is so endemic in South Africa — what do you do if somebody is in the house? Do you think it’s one of your family? Of course you don’t.”
A nation watches her star on TV hit
MILLIONS of South Africans last night tuned into a reality television show featuring tragic model Reeva.
Roads, bars and restaurants fell silent as viewers crowded round screens to watch the Survivor-style Tropika Island programme.
The show’s production company had earlier broadcast a touching video of the star speaking poignantly of her determination to make her mark in life.
Footage pictured Reeva laughing as she played with dolphins on the show’s Jamaica set.
She was heard saying: “I think the way that you go out — not just your journey in life — but the way you go out and make your exit is so important.
“You either make an impact in a positive or a negative way, but just maintain integrity and maintain class. Just be true to yourself.”
Rugby pal denial
A SOUTH African rugby international spoke out last night to deny rumours about his relationship with tragic Reeva.
Playboy scrum half Francois Hougaard, 24, was a pal of both the model and Pistorius.
But as speculation swirled on the internet, the ace insisted the “whole sad ordeal” of Reeva’s death had “nothing to do with him”.
Spokesman Lorinda Voges added: “Our client will not comment on any rumours or answer any questions regarding Reeva Steenkamp or Oscar Pistorius at this stage as this is still an ongoing investigation.”
