CARLOS TEVEZ reopened his feud with Manchester United with a title taunt at Alex Ferguson.
The controversial Argie striker held up a banner, which read ‘RIP Fergie’ during Manchester City’s Premier League celebrations in the city today.
It is unclear where Tevez obtained the banner but he did not have it when he boarded the bus to begin the tour of the centre at Albert Square.
The meaning behind it could well be in reference to Ferguson‘s famous response to a 2009 question as to whether or not United would ever be underdogs against City. “Not in my lifetime,” the Scot said.
City later apologised to Ferguson for Tevez's stunt.
A statement read: "The creation of the tasteless material is in itself reprehensible and in accepting and brandishing it, Carlos has made a significant error of judgment.
"Manchester City wishes to express its sincerest apologies to Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United Football Club for any offence or distress caused.”
City are celebrating their first title success in 44 years after a dramatic last-gasp win over QPR yesterday saw them pip arch-rivals United on goal difference.
The incident came at the end of a campaign in which Tevez spent more than three months in Argentina on unauthorised leave during an extraordinary dispute with the club.
Tevez returned to City to play an influential role in their title run-in but continued to divide opinion among fans despite making peace with manager Roberto Mancini.
His performances in the closing weeks of the campaign, which included a hat-trick against Norwich, were reminiscent of many in his first two seasons at the Etihad Stadium.
The 28-year-old twice finished as City’s top scorer after quitting United for Eastlands three years ago and was the inspiration for last year’s FA Cup win.
It was widely assumed he would still look to leave the club when he returned from his self-imposed exile in February and apologised for his conduct, but he has recently said he wants to stay.
