Reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain eased to a 2-0 win against Corsican minnows Gazelec Ajaccio to maintain their perfect start to the Frence Ligue 1 season on Sunday after Marseille slumped to another defeat.
A stunning Blaise Matuidi strike and a Thiago Silva header, both in the first half, put PSG out of sight against newly-promoted Gazelec at the Parc des Princes and left Laurent Blanc's side with six points from a possible six at the start of the new campaign. Argentina winger Angel di Maria, the €63m signing from Manchester United, was introduced to the Paris fans before kick-off, although he was not yet fit enough to make his debut.
And with Zlatan Ibrahimovic again sidelined, PSG were not at full strength, as 18-year-old forward Jean-Kevin Augustin was handed a first start in the top flight. But this was always likely to be a trying night for Gazelec, a club whose overall budget for their debut season at the top level barely equates to Ibrahimovic's annual salary at the Parc des Princes.
It always seemed a question of when, not if, Paris would open the scoring and they duly did so in the 11th minute thanks to Matuidi, the France midfielder taking the ball into the box and then sending a fizzing left-foot drive high into the net from a tightening angle. PSG added their second goal just before the midway point in the first half, captain Silva putting the disappointment of being dropped from the Brazil squad last week behind him as he headed home from a Thiago Motta corner.
At that point it looked like turning into a rout, but Edinson Cavani failed to convert several openings in the second half and Serge Aurier headed a great chance wide. David Luiz was denied by a brilliant Clement Maury save as the hosts settled for a win that leaves them, ominously, already in top spot on goal difference.
Coaches Marseille continue slumpEarlier on Sunday, Marseille slumped to a second defeat in as many games, a first-half strike by Hamari Traore giving Reims all three points in a 1-0 win in Champagne country. Marseille, still reeling from the shock resignation of coach Marcelo Bielsa following their opening 1-0 defeat to Caen, never really looked like scoring and find themselves in the relegation zone in the fledgling standings.
Bielsa's former assistant Franck Passi took charge of the away side in Reims but he insisted the Argentine's departure could not be used as an excuse for a disappointing display. "We have to stop talking about trauma! We've put last weekend (Bielsa's resignation) behind us," said Passi.
"We mustn't hide behind that excuse. But it's clear that it will not be easy and it will take time to find a solution." In contrast to OM, it has been a great start to the season for Reims, who had already beaten Bordeaux on the opening weekend.
Sunday's other match saw Lorient scramble a 1-1 draw at home to Bastia thanks to a stoppage-timeBenjamin Moukandjo penalty, which cancelled out Floyd Ayite's early opener. Mathieu Valbuena made his Lyon debut in a 1-0 win at Guingamp on Saturday as Claudio Beauvue netted the only goal of the game against his old club.

Wolfsburg see off Frankfurt, Cologne sink Stuttgart (AFP) Sunday 16 August 20

Last season's German Bundesliga runners-up Wolfsburg opened their new league campaign with a 2-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday as all three goals came in the opening 20 minutes.
Dieter Hecking's side, who finished ten points behind champions Bayern Munich last season, flew out of the blocks at the Volkswagen Arena with Croatia winger Ivan Perisic and Dutch striker Bas Dost putting them 2-0 up. Wolves were rewarded for some patient build-up play as new striker Max Kruse fired in a brilliant cross which Perisic headed home at the far post on 13 minutes.
They doubled their lead four minutes later after calamitous Frankfurt defending in the area as Kruse poked the ball across the face of goal and Dost buried his shot from close range. Frankfurt fought back with defensive midfielder Stefan Reinartz taking advantage of some sloppy Wolfsburg defending to pull a goal back for the visitors on 19 minutes.
It proved to be the end of the scoring, although both sides had second-half chances as Perisic in particular went close.
Later, Cologne beat hosts Stuttgart 3-1 as Anthony Modeste converted a second-half penalty and Simon Zoller doubled the visitors' lead two minutes later before Stuttgart's Daniel Didavi netted a late spot-kick. Japan striker Yuya Osako came off the bench to claim Cologne's third goal just before the final whistle by tapping home Modeste's pass.

Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany and Fernandinho scored as Manchester City crushed Chelsea 3-0 on Sunday to establish a five-point advantage over the champions in the fledgling English Premier League table.
After going close several times, Aguero celebrated his return to the starting XI by wriggling throughChelsea's defence to score a 31st-minute opener before Kompany and Fernandinho made the game safe late on. The well-earned victory continued City's impressive start to the season following their 3-0 win at West Bromwich Albion and gave Manuel Pellegrini a first win over his nemesis Jose Mourinho since the Portuguese returned to Chelsea in 2013.
Defeat completed a miserable week for Mourinho, widely criticised for demoting his medics Eva Carneiro and Jon Fearn after last weekend's 2-2 draw with Swansea City, and means Chelsea have failed to win one of their first two league games for the first time since 1998. It was also a day to forget for visiting captain John Terry, who watched the second half from the bench after being substituted at half-time - the first time Mourinho had taken him off in 177 league games.
After a flurry of near-misses, Aguero broke the deadlock by exchanging passes with Yaya Toure, darting into the box and placing a low shot beyond the reach of Asmir Begovic, deputising for the suspended Thibaut Courtois. Hazard forced Joe Hart into a save in the second half, but City looked more likely to add to their lead and so it proved as Kompany headed home from David Silva's 79th-minute corner before Fernandinho drilled home from the edge of the box.
Arsenal edge Palace
Earlier, Arsene Wenger breathed a sigh of relief as Arsenal got their title challenge up and running with a hard-fought 2-1 win at Crystal Palace. After slumping to a dismal 2-0 defeat against West Ham United in their opening game, Wenger's side had no margin for error at Selhurst Park if they wanted to avoid being cast adrift in the title race.
They rose to the challenge, securing a first league win of the season thanks to Olivier Giroud's superb 16th-minute volley and a Damien Delaney own goal in the 55th minute after Joel Ward had blasted Palace level. It was a much-needed confidence boost for the Gunners and Wenger conceded it would have been hard to recover if they had left Selhurst Park empty-handed.
"I'm very pleased with the three points. If we had gone two games and zero points it would be absolutely difficult and we knew this would be a tricky one," Wenger said. "Last week we had a bit of a stroll and thought we would win the game. Today we played real Premier League football from the first minute to the last. With the ambitions we have made, you have to have full commitment and we had that today."

The ex-boyfriend of Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro says his life has been 'ruined' after dating the glamorous medic.
Rupert Patterson-Ward said he wanted to start a family with Ms Carneiro but that the tumultuous relationship came to a bitter end when he claims she 'chewed me up and spat me out'.
The commercial manager also said he was constantly intimated by the 41-year-old's popularity among the Chelsea players.

Ms Carneiro hit the headlines last week after being demoted by Jose Mourinho following a furious touchline row about whether she should have treated one of the players.
Describing her as 'fiery', Mr Patterson-Ward told The Sun: 'I was besotted with her and we were planning a family, but she chewed me up and spat me out.'
Mr Patterson-Ward claimed he met Gibraltar-born Ms Carneiro in 2011 at Frankie's sports bar in the club's Stamford Bridge complex, a day which he compared to a 'Carlsberg TV ad.'
He said he was welcomed into the club's 'inner circle' and even travelled to Munich for the Champions League final with Christine Bleakley - partner of Frank Lampard - and John Terry's wife Toni.
Mr Patterson-Ward said the pair were initially 'blissfully' happy.

But, despite sub-letting his flat and moving in with the doctor at her home in Earlsfield a year or so later, the pair began to have furious rows.
One of their big bust-ups came when he apparently did not 'make enough effort' for her 39th birthday. Their acrimonious split came at the end of the 2013 season after a trip to Marbella.
He added: 'She is a fiery Latino. Eva loved the attention.'
Ms Carneiro was publicly haraunged by Mourinho after she and her colleague Jon Fearn rushed onto the pitch to tend to Eden Hazard near the end of the 2-2 draw with Swansea on Saturday last week.

Chelsea were already down to 10 men and Hazard receiving treatment meant he had to spend a few moments on the touchline, leaving the champions vulnerable.
The Chelsea manager was furious and video footage subsequently released by Sky Sports shows him screaming 'son of a bitch' at the medic during the heated touchline row.
He later said: 'I wasn't happy with my medical staff because even if you are a medical doctor or secretary on the bench you have to understand the game.
'You have to know that when you have one player less and, in the end, you go on to the pitch to assist a player then you must be sure that a player has a serious problem.
'I was sure that Eden didn't have a serious problem. He had a knock and was very tired.

'My medical department left me with eight fit players in a counter-attack after a set piece and we were worried we didn't have enough players left.'
After those comments, Chelsea fans rushed to send Carneiro messages of support. She later posted on Facebook: 'I would like to thank the general public for their overwhelming support. Really very much appreciated.'
But instead of patching things up with her, Mourinho took more drastic action. The 41-year-old, who was born in Gibraltar, will keep her job title as first-team doctor but she will no longer be allowed at training sessions, matches or the team hotel.

Carneiro, who supports Spanish side Real Madrid, was promoted to her role with the Chelsea first team by Andre Villas-Boas in 2011 and has since worked with Roberto di Matteo, Rafa Benitez and now Mourinho.
Born to a Spanish father and British mother, she has studied at Nottingham University and Queen Mary University of London.
Carneiro spent time with West Ham before being appointed to the UK Sports and Medicine Specialist training program with the Olympic Medical Institute preparing athletes for the 2008 Olympic Games.
She spent some time working for the England women's football team before joining Chelsea in 2009.
